Inventing the Energies of the Future

We know that to meet energy demand in the coming decades, we need to continue to invest in alternatives to oil and gas that are both cost-effective and environmentally efficient. Total has a long-standing commitment to renewable energies and other alternative, low- and zero-carbon energies. Today, our ambition is to invent and develop an energy offering that is more innovative, diversified and sustainable.

Our four strategic priorities are solar energy, bioenergy and second-generation biomass, nuclear power and helping to make clean coal a reality in coming years. At the same time, we continue to explore other promising avenues and new energy vectors. These include hydrogen fuel cells and their various applications, methanol, which can be used in a number of forms, and dimethyl ether (DME), a clean, versatile molecule that can be used as a fuel for transportation, heating and power generation and as a feedstock for the petrochemicals industry. We are also carefully monitoring the possibility of using ocean energy — from waves, tides and currents — to produce electricity.
